Isaiah 40 prophecies that a voice will cry out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, & every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, & the rough places a plain.” As I read these verses, I was captured by the word picture here: a seismic shifting of mountains & valleys into a level plain.
So, repentance is like the asphalt we pour on a rough road to make it smooth. Let no pride or sin obstruct the King from coming & reigning in our lives. We want the gates flung wide open (Psalm 24:7) for the King of glory!
At first, I was trying to fit the verse lyrics I had written into a pop melody & it just wasn’t working. When I found the current gospel melody, it felt right & the rest of the song followed quickly.
Verse 1-3 describes Jesus’s first advent, & verse 4 reminds us that He is coming again & to be ready! The idea of the sun rising comes from Malachi 4:2 and Luke 1:78 (Zechariah's song). In both cases, Jesus is the sun, rising with healing & salvation for those who fear & follow Him.
So, will we let Him in? Let us pave every road with repentance and break down our defenses, that the King of Glory may come in. Let every heart prepare Him room!
